Viking Slavic round shield with Perun symbol

Viking Slavic round shield with Perun symbol

I made this shield inspired by the early medieval round-shaped shield models.
It features Ancient Slavic ornamental patterns, steel bolts, and a metal umbo, it is made of 15mm thick birch plywood and poplar wood for the handle, decorated with the techniques of wood-burning and staining.
The main motif used in the shield is – the thunder mark of Perun – the highest god of the Slavic pantheon and the god of the sky, thunder, lightning, storms, rain, law, war, fertility, and oak trees.

Thunder marks are considered by some scholars as "ancient symbols of Perun", which are often engraved upon roof beams or over entries of village houses, to protect them from lightning bolts. Their circular shape symbolizes ball lightning. Identical symbols were discovered on Slavic pottery of 4th-century Chernyakhov culture.

The shield can be used as a decorative wall hanger or as a functional piece for medieval reenactment or LARP.
